Chapel, Northwick Park Hospital, near Harrow

In the main building of this hospital designed by Llewelyn-Davies & Weeks and built from the 1960s. The chapel has a balcony area connected by staircase to the main chapel on the lower floor.

St Mary’s Chapel, Whittington Hospital, Highgate Hill, Archway

Little more than a room with a few furnishings and some plaques from an older chapel. ir opened in 1987.

Bethlem Royal Hospital chapel, Monks Orchard Road, Beckenham

The hospital which deals with mental illness moved here in 1930 from what is now the Imperial War Museum. A freestanding chapel just inside the entrance gates was built. The architects were Elcock & Sutcliffe with the chapel being designed by Ralph Maynard Smith. Despite damage in 1944 there are several period fittings extant. One corner at the back is now a small Muslim prayer area but the building retains more traditional church fittings than many hospital chapels.

Chapel, St John and St Elizabeth Hospital, Grove End Road, St John’s Wood (Roman Catholic)

A private hospital and hospice (though containing an NHS GP service). The chapel was moved from previous premises in Great Portland Street and reconstructed here within new buildings. The chapel dates from 1864 and is by George Goldie rebuilt here by Edward Goldie 1898-1902.

Chapel, Croydon University Hospital, London Road, Croydon

A free standing building in a garden at the rear of the hospital on Woodcroft Road. It is now a multi faith space but still Christian in general look and feel with a sanctuary and stained glass.

Chapel, University College Hospital, Euston Road

A small room on the ground floor near the Euston Road, part of a suite of Christian, Muslim and Jewish spaces. It is part of the hospital rebuilding in 2000-2005 by Llewelyn-Davies & Weeks

Chapel (Former), Springfield Hospital, Tooting

This is the site of a mental hospital that is being redeveloped into a large housing complex. The chapel of 1881 is now at one end of a public square. It appears to be currently without a use.

Chapel, Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, Fulham Road, Chelsea

On the 1st floor of the hospital. The current building dates from 1993 and is by architects Sheppard Robson. The chapel is a small room that contains items from some of the hospitals that were combined at this site. This includes a 16th-century Veronese painting that was at the Westminster Hospital and stained glass windows from St Mary Abbots Hospital and the Westminster Children’s Hospital.

Chapel, St George’s Hospital, Tooting

The hospital moved from Hyde Park Corner in central London to Tooting from the 1970s onwards. The chapel is a small room in the Spirituality Centre on the ground floor not far from the main entrance. The only unique feature is a perspex artwork on one wall.

St Bernard’s Hospital Chapel (Former), Uxbridge Road, Southall

St Bernard’s was a pioneer mental hospital built in the 1820s, some of the site (next to Ealing Hospital on the borders of Hanwell and Southall) is still in NHS use but much has now been converted to or newly built as housing. The chapel is due to be converted into artist’s studios according to signage (March 2024). It was designed by H. Martin and built in 1881.
