All Saints, Margaret Street

One of the most famous 19th century churches in Britain. It was designed by William Butterfield and built 1850-59. The interior is an ideal of the mid-Victorian Anglo catholic parish church. It sits on a very restricted site just behind the east end of Oxford Street.

St Clement Danes, The Strand

The RAF church sitting on an island near the Aldwych on The Strand. Christopher Wren’s church of 1682 was badly damaged in the second world war and rebuilt in the 1950s. A crypt runs at right angles to the church itself.

St Paul, Covent Garden

The first classical church in London built by Inigo Jones 1631-38, but rebuilt after fire by Thomas Hardwick 1795-98, with 19th century restoration by Butterfield in 1871-1872a and Henry Clutton in 1878-1882. Its east end is the backdrop to the Covent garden piazza. Known as “The actor’s church”, there are many, mainly 20th century memorials to well known actors.

St George, Hanover Square, Mayfair

A large classical church a few yards from Regent Street. It was designed by John James and built between 1713 and 1724. The show front is partially covered in scaffolding (Feb 2023), the images without it are from 2011.

St Mary Magdalene, Rowington Close, Paddington

Alongside the Grand Union Canal this is one of George Edmund Street’s masterpieces dating from 1868-1878. It is fitted onto an awkwardly shaped site,  defined by now demolished streets.  Most of the glass was designed by Henry Holliday and made by Heaton, Butler and Bayne. The south aisle of the crypt (the bottom 10 pictures) was made into the chapel of St Sepulchre by Ninian Comper in 1895, it was renovated by Sebastian Comper in 1967.  When I visited in 2012 this was in need of restoration, which was carried out in 2019. At that time the west end gained an extension called Grand Junction containing a cafe and community facilities. The top set of images is from 2025 and the lower set is from 2012.
