St Silas, St Silas Place, Kentish Town

One of the “highest” Anglican churches in London. It was designed by Ernest Shearman and built in 1911-12. The contents are a remarkable collection of furnishings and decorations. The banners and the triptych are by Nina Somerset, who also added the painted colour to the Stations of the Cross.

Holy Cross, Cromer Street, Kings Cross

By Joseph Peacock, 1887. The font is by J.L. Pearson and there is a window by Martin Travers.

St George’s Cathedral (former Christ Church), Albany Street, Regents Park (Antiochian Orthodox)

Built as Christ Church for Anglicans in 1836-37 by James Pennethorne. The chancel was added by R.C. Carpenter in 1843. It is now leased to the Antiochian Orthodox church, which is the Orthodox church for  Middle Eastern states such as Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. There is much Clayton and Bell glass, plus one early Morris window designed by Rossetti. many of the furnishings such as the font, pulpit and high altar were designed by William Butterfield.

St Mark, St Mark’s Square, Regents Park

Near the Regent’s Canal and the Zoo a church by Thomas Little of 1851-52, to which Blomfield added a chancel  in 1890, however war damage meant that the roofs and east wall were by A.P. Knapp-Fisher and date from 1957. There are  Ninian Comper altarpieces and stained glass that were added after the war, replacing damaged items by the same artist.

Facing Marylebone Road and built by Thomas Hardwick 1813-17. Apse added 1883 by Thomas Harris

St James, Sherriff Road, West Hampstead

By Sir Arthur Blomfield 1885-88. Almost opposite West Hampstead tube station. In 2014 it was adapted to be a community facility and now houses, a post office, cafe, soft play centre and a worship area in the nave. The chancel is unchanged.

All Saints, Margaret Street

One of the most famous 19th century churches in Britain. It was designed by William Butterfield and built 1850-59. The interior is an ideal of the mid-Victorian Anglo catholic parish church. It sits on a very restricted site just behind the east end of Oxford Street.

St Pancras Old Church

Standing in a large churchyard just north of St Pancras station. The bulk of the church is by A.D. Gough and R.L.Romieu (1847-48) in a norman style but there is some original norman work incorporated.

St Peter, Clerkenwell (Roman Catholic)

An Italian Roman Catholic Church, surprisingly large behind the narrow street frontage by John Miller Bryson 1862 -1863. The upper part of the west front was added in 1891 by F.W. Tasker.

St Pancras New Church, Woburn Place, Euston

A Greek revival church designed by the Inwoods in 1819-1822. Opposite Euston station. The interior is rather dark as every window is filled with Clayton & Bell glass.
