St Matthew, South Street, Ponders End

The nave and north aisle are by H.J. Paull and date from 1877-78 and to which J.E.K and J.P. Cutts added a chancel and chapel in 1900.

St Mary, Ponders End (Roman Catholic)

At the north end of Ponders End this is by Joseph Goldie and dates from 1921-24.

St James, Enfield Highway

A Commissioner’s style church of 1831 by W.C. Lochner with a chancel of 1864 which was rebuilt following a fire in 1969 by J. Barrington-Baker and Partners. It sits in a large churchyard at the south end of the shopping area.

St George, Freezy Water, Enfield Wash

St Peter and St Paul, Ordnance Road, Enfield Lock

Near Enfield Lock station, it is a 1969 replacement by Romilly Craze for a war damaged church. The reredos was designed by William Lethaby and was formerly in the Harrow Mission church which is now a community facility in west London near Ladbroke Grove.

Jesus Church, Forty Hill

On the edge of open country in the north of the borough. It dates from 1835 and is by Thomas Ashwell. The chancel was added in 1926 and is by A.E. Henderson. The war memorial is made up of turrets removed from the church.

Our Lady of Walsham and the English Martyrs, Holtwhites Hill, Gordon Hill (Roman Catholic)

A chapel of ease to Enfield not far from Chase Farm Hospital in the Gordon Hill area of the borough. Designed by John Gooch of housebuilders Laing, it was completed in 1987.

St Andrew, Enfield

Enfield parish church, in the Market Place in a churchyard set back from the main street. It is basically a much restored medieval church with the south aisle rebuilt in  brick in 1824 by W.C. Lochner. Other restorations were carried out by J.P. St. Aubyn in 1866-67 and J.O. Scott in 1908-09

St Luke, Browning Road, Enfield

One of James Brooks’ final churches, eastern parts 1899-1900 and nave 1908. High on a ridge in the north of the borough.

St Mary Magdalene, Enfield

A late William Butterfield church of 1883. It sits on a hilltop above Enfield and near the Ridgeway. The chancel was decorated in 1897 with designs by Nathaniel Westlake and Charles Buckeridge. It was restored in 2012 and presents a great contrast with the rather plain nave.  Much of the stained glass was designed by Butterfield and made by Heaton, Butler and Bayne.
