Holy Trinity, Merton Road, Wimbledon

Side on to the main road east of the town centre. It dates from 1862 and is by John Johnson. It has been extensively altered inside with a conservatory like outer aisle, new ceilings, divided off west end and unused chancel.

St Andrew, Herbert Road, Wimbledon

In a cul-de-sac not far from the Broadway it was built 1908-9 and designed by William Henry Lowdell.

 

St Peter (former), Kohat Road, Wimbledon now Bethel Oasis of of Jesus Christ

Close to Haydons Road Station. The church consists of eastern parts by Greenaway and Newberry dating from 1911-12 and western parts which are a mission church of 1901. It closed in 1982 and is now used by the Bethel Oasis of of Jesus Christ.

Christ the King, The Crescent, Wimbledon Park (Roman Catholic)

Very close to Wimbledon Park tube station, it is a low building of 1928 by Adrian Scott. The body of the church is sunken and accessed by two short flights of steps.

St Mary, Church Road, Wimbledon

The parish church of Wimbledon, but well to the east of the village centre. The medieval church was rebuilt in 1788 by John Johnson and in 1843 by G.G. Scott & Moffat. The chancel was rebuilt by Scott in 1860. The Cecil chapel on the south side of the chancel is of 1626-36.

Emmanuel, The Ridgeway, Wimbledon

A proprietary chapel (a privately owned Anglican church), one of only two in London, of 1888 near Wimbledon village. The architect is unrecorded. The western half of the nave has had a ceiling added and is divided off as a hall, kitchen and offices.

Christ Church, Copse Hill, West Wimbledon

Built 1859-60 by S.S. Teulon, with a west bay added in 1881 by Charles Maylard and an 1875 choir vestry added by F.C. Penrose.

 

St Matthew, Durham Road, West Wimbledon

Close to Raynes Park station. It is a church of 1958 by Sebastian Comper, replacing one of Ernest Shearman’s, a1909 church that had suffered war damage. It retains that church’s foundation stone, a figure of Christ, and the Lady Chapel reredos.

Holy Cross, Douglas Avenue, Motspur Park

In the heart of suburbia. The church of 1949 by Ralph Covell replaced a bombed church of 1914.
