St Peter, Goresbrook Road, Becontree (Roman Catholic)

Opposite St Martin in the south-east corner of Becontree, designed by W.C. Mangan and built in 1937. The more recent stained glass is awkward to photograph well as it is inside the locked repository.

St Martin, Goresbrook Road, Becontree

In the southeast of Becontree opposite St Peter’s Roman Catholic church. It dates from 1931-32 and was designed by J.E. Newberry and C.W.Fowler. Above the altar is one of Hans Feibusch’s paintings, this one of the crucifixion and dating from 1949.

St Andrew, The Drive, Ilford

On the north side of Ilford, a massive church by Sir Herbert Baker dating from 1923-24, the hall of 1907 next door was the church until the current one was built. There are several fine Karl Parsons windows in the church. There is also a brand new window in the chancel clerestory by David Griffiths. A side chapel is a memorial to the Griggs family who paid for much of the church.

St Luke, Baxter Road, Ilford

Just nave, aisles and transepts were built of this church of 1914-15 by Edwin T. Dunn.

St Alban, Albert Road, Ilford

A typical church by J.E.K. and J.P. Cutts built 1899-1910. The rood came from St Edmund, Edmonton and the 18th-century pulpit from All Souls, Oxford.

Holy Family, Oxlow Lane, Becontree (Roman Catholic)

St Elisabeth, Wood Lane, Becontree

In the centre of the estate, dating from 1931-32 by Sir Charles Nicholson. I have a full set of interior images but I have been requested, by the churchwardens, not to display them on the web.

St Mary, Grafton Road, Becontree

Built in 1934-35 by Welch, Cachemaille-Day and Lander in an unusual 1930s version of gothic. The organ and war memorial came from the demolished Rams Episcopal Chapel at Homerton.

St Thomas, Burnside Road, Becontree

The first Anglican church on the estate, from 1926-27 by Arthur C. Blomfield.
