Catholic Apostolic Church, Maida Avenue

A large J.L. Pearson church, for this virtually disappeared sect. It was built 1891-93 and faces the Regent’s Canal near Little Venice.

Holy Trinity (former), Marylebone Road, St Marylebone

Opposite Great Portland Street station.The church was designed 1826-28 by Sir John Soane. Redundant as a church from the 1930s it was used as a book storage facility and then until 2006 it was SPCK offices but has now been converted to an event venue called Number 1 Marylebone with the galleries separated off from the body of the church. The nave area is sometimes used by the evangelical Commonwealth Church.

St James, Sussex Gardens, Paddington

The bulk of the church is by G.E, Street 1881-82 but the chancel of a church by Goldicutt & Gutch from 1841-43 was used as the west end of the new church.

St John the Evangelist, Hyde Park Crescent

Between Paddington Station and Edgware Road. Built by Charles Fowler 1829-32 and restored by Arthur Blomfield 1888.

St Barnabas, Pimlico

1847-50 by Thomas Cundy II. The chancel was decorated in the later 19th century by Bodley. A Lady chapel was created and decorated by Comper with much Kempe glass added to the windows.

St Cyprian, Clarence Gate, St Marylebone

A major early work by Sir Ninian Comper near Marylebone Station. Consecration was in 1903 and furnishings were added up to the 1940s.

St Mary, Bourne Street, Victoria

Its entrance is hidden away behind buildings, designed by R.J. Withers in 1873-74. The porch was added by H.S, Goodhart-Rendell 1925-28. It is a centre of high church Anglicanism. These images were taken during an exhibition of vestments and most of the nave seating had been removed.

St Saviour, Pimlico

Built in 1863-64 by Thomas Cundy II. It faces across St George’s Square.

St Patrick, Soho Square, Soho (Roman Catholic)

A large red brick church in Soho Square designed by John Kelly 1891-93.

St Andrew by the Wardrobe, City of London

By Wren 1685-94 and restored after war damage by Marshall Sisson 1959-61. The galleries are converted to a library and the aisles to offices and rooms. Since September 2023 it has been used by a Coptic Orthodox congregation and there bare two tastefully added icons in front of the sanctuary n(see second set of images)
