St Charles Borremeo, Ogle Street, Westminster (Roman Catholic)

North of Oxford Street, this is a church of 1862 by S.J. Nicholl. The reredos is by J.F. Bentley.

Our Lady of the Assumption, Warwick Street, Soho (Roman Catholic)

One of the oldest Roman Catholic Churches in Britain. It is by Joseph Bonomi, 1789-90. J.F. Bentley shortened the galleries in 1875-75 and recast the east end in 1900.

Guard’s Chapel, Birdcage Walk, Westminster

Part of Wellington barracks just south of St James Park. The building dates from 1961-63 and was designed by Bruce George. At its east end it incorporates an apse by G.E. Street (1877-79) that remains from the bombing of the previous building in 1944. The brown brick cloister is by H.S. Goodhart-Rendell dates from 1954-55.

Our Lady of Lourdes and St Vincent de Paul, Harrow Road, Maida Hill

A forbidding-looking church and social centre on the busy Harrow Road. It was designed by Clive Broad and was built 1973-75, The lower set of exteriors shows the church in December 2014, the upper set in January 2023 with some external refurbishment.

St John the Evangelist, Harrow Road, Kensal Green

On a busy crossroads, a neo Norman church of 1844 by H.E. Kendall. A small apsidal chancel was added by A. Billing in 1903.

St Mark, Hamilton Terrace, St John’s Wood

The nave is by Thomas Cundy II from 1846-47, the spire was completed in 1864 and rebuilt in 1955. The chancel and porches were added by Benjamin Ferrey in 1866-78. The images below are from late 2014. Late on 26 January 2023, the church caught fire (cause unknown) and is currently a burnt-out shell. The remains are stable, but its future is unknown as of January 2023. The set of post-fire images further down,  were taken on 31 January 2023.

St Peter, Elgin Avenue, Paddington

A small church built as part of a community complex. It is by Biscoe & Stanton and dates from 1974-77, replacing a 19th century church.

Our Lady, Lisson Grove, St John’s Wood (Roman Catholic)

An early Catholic church 0f 1833-36 designed by J.J. Scoles. Thr teansepts were originally living qurters but were converted into chapels in 1937 by Nicholas & Dixon Spain.

St John, Park Road, St John’s Wood

Opposite Lord’s cricket ground it was built 1813, architect Thomas Hardwick. The galleries were enclosed in the 1930s.

Notre Dame de France, Leicester Place, Soho (Roman Catholic)

dating from 1951-55 it is by H.O. Corfiato and serves the French speaking catholic community. It forms the lower part of a block of flats, but the church itself is circular. The great treasure is the set of paintings by Jean Cocteau in the Lady chapel which were added in 1960
