Corpus Christi, Covent Garden (Roman Catholic)

Set below road level, close to the Piazza area. Designed 1873-74 by F.H. Pownall. It was undergoing east end restoration in October 2016 when the images at the foot of this set with scaffolding were taken. The latest images from April 2018 show the completed work, including the exposed brickwork of the nave.

Crown Court Church, Russell Street, Westminster, WC2B 5EZ (Church of Scotland)

Hidden away in Covent Garden with a rather unprepossessing exterior. The church was designed by Hugh Thackery Turner in 1906-1909, replacing an earlier Kirk. The stained glass is by M. Farrar-Bell. 

Grosvenor Chapel, South Audley Street,

Originally a proprietary (i.e. private) chapel in Mayfair. The architect is probably Benjamin Timbrell and it was built 1730-31. The chancel was seperated off with a screen to form a lady chapel in 1912-13

Immaculate Conception, Farm Street (Roman Catholic)

A large Roman Catholic church in Mayfair, it is the Jesuit’s English headquarters. It was built by J.J. Scoles 1844-49. Outer aisles were added in 1876-78 by Henry Clutton and 1898-1903 W.H. Romaine-Walker.

Savoy Chapel

Built as part of the Hospital of St John between 1510-16. It is down a side turning between The Strand and the Thames. The bell turret was added by Sir Robert Smirke in 1820-21 and the whole was restored by Sydney Smirke 1864-65.

St Mary le Strand

On an island in The Strand, the church was designed by James Gibbs and  built 1714-17.

St Peter, Vere Street

Behind Debenhams in Oxford Street. It was an estate chapel and is now the London Institute for Contemporary Christianity. The architect was James Gibbs and it was built 1721-24. The interior is now bare but it still has William Morris glass designed by Burne-Jones in the east window which dates from 1881.

St James the Less, Pimlico

G.E. Street’s first London church (1860-61), south of Victoria Station and surrounded by the Churchill Gardens estate. The interior features much notched brickwork, Clayton & Bell glass, a highly decorated chancel and a mosaic replacing a fresco by G.F. Watts over the chancel arch. The church is now run by an evangelical plant from Chester Square (note the change in altar furnishings!). There has been some restoration of the pulpit and screen, with plans for the ceiling too. The first gallery is from November 2025, the second from 2014.

All Souls, Langham Place

Next to Broadcasting House just north of Oxford Circus. The church was designed by John Nash and built 1822-24. It is a centre of evangelical Anglicanism.

St Clement Danes, The Strand

The RAF church sitting on an island near the Aldwych on The Strand. Christopher Wren’s church of 1682 was badly damaged in the second world war and rebuilt in the 1950s. A crypt runs at right angles to the church itself.
