St Christopher (Pembroke College Mission), Tatum Street, Walworth

Of all the college missions, only this and the Trinity College mission still fulfil their religious and community functions in the London Borough of Southwark. The church is on the first floor above halls and offices, with housing to one side. The lower floor is by E.S. Prior from 1891-92, while the church dates from 1908 and was designed by Herbert Passmore. The chancel of the church is separated by gates from the nave which is now mainly in use as a hall, with one aisle partitioned off for smaller rooms.

Christ Church, Old Kent Road, Camberwell

The east end faces the road. The church dates from 1867-68 and is by the “Rogue” architect Enoch Bassett Keeling. The spire has been lost, replaced by a simple tower top. War damage was repaired by Thomas F. Ford.

St Augustine (Former) , Lynton Road, Bermondsey

Now converted to flats the eastern parts date from 1875-1878 and the western form 1882-1883. The designers were Henry Jarvis and Sons. It was made redundant in 1995 and for 10 years was leased to ABMT Christian Fellowship. In 2005 it was leased for domestic conversion.

St James, St James Road/Thurland Street, Bermondsey

A Commissioner’s church of 1827-1829 by James Savage. The interior was divided in 1965 with the west end and space under the galleries partitioned. This emphasises the great height of the church which has a clerestory above the tall galleries. The interior is dominated by the altar piece painting of the Ascension of Christ by John Wood, dating from 1844. It is currently (November 2018) undergoing restoration work at the west end

St John Chrysostom, Meeting House Lane, Peckham

This building replaced St Jude which had been bombed out. The current church was built in 1965 and designed by David Bush. The large interior is very dark and lit by a window inside the tower structure and a large stretch of dal de verre glass. The Lady Chapel also features the same kind of glass.  The Stations of the cross made of crosses with the appropriate number of nails are unusual. The tall brick street front has been adorned with a huge mural called Run by Giacomo Bufarini since 2017.

St Matthew, Meadow Row, Newington

A small church south of Elephant and Castle. It dates from 1993-94 and was designed by Hans Haenlein, it has a particular mission to the Spanish speaking community.

Holy Trinity (Former), Trinity Church Square, Southwark now Henry Wood Hall

In the centre of an elegant square, this is one of Francis Bedford’s Commissioners churches of 1823-1824. It was closed in 1960, gutted in a fire in 1973 and converted to recording and rehearsal studios by Arup Associates in 1973-1975.

Corpus Christi Mission (Former), Ilderton Road, Bermondsey now Christ the King Chapel

A tall building with the worship area on the upper floor. It dates from 1887 and was closed in 1962. The architect does not seem to be known but they were clearly influenced by James Brooks.  It has been used by the Christ the King Chapel since 2002

St Katharine, Eugenia Road, Bermondsey

The church replaced a war-damaged church of 1894 (see b&w image below) and now serves the Silwood Estate. It was designed by Covell Matthews and Partners in 1960, in a style reminiscent of Cachemaille-Day.

St Gertrude, Debnams Road. Bermondsey (Roman Catholic)

In a short dead-end road off Rotherhithe New Road, this is a small church of 1902-1903 by F.W. Tasker. It is very similar to many other Tasker churches paid for by Frances Ellis in the early 20th century.
