St Paul, Petersfield Avenue, Harold Hill

Rather hidden behind Holy Redeemer RC church opposite one of Harold Hill’s shopping parades. St Paul dates from 1953. The worship area is up a flight of stairs and has been re-orientated along a long side, with the praise band in the former sanctuary.

St George, Farnham Road, Harold Hill

By J.J. Crowe 1952-53 with alterations in 1984-85. It stands high up at one end of the large suburban shopping centre off Hilldene Avenue.

St Antony, St Antony’s Road, Forest Gate (Roman Catholic)

A large church of 1884-91 by Pugin & Pugin, very close to West Ham Park. It was attached to a Franciscan monastery whose buildings still remain. There is  project underway since 2019 to restore the formerly hidden high altar and sanctuary to its original state

 

All Saints, Romford Road, Manor Park

A large church near Woodgrange Park Station. It was built in 1886 and designed by A.W. Blomfield. It is now (November 2017) threatened with demolition.

Emmanuel, Forest Gate

Forest Gate’s town centre church on a busy cross roads. It is by George Gilbert Scott dating from 1850-52. The north aisle was enlarged by W.A Coombs in 1890-91 so that the immediate impression is of a double naved church.

St Saviour, MacDonald Road, Forest Gate

Originally the church hall. By F.Danby Smith 1904

St Erkenwald, Levett Road, Upney

Designed by R.C. Foster of Tooley & Foster an built 1954-1955. The relief over the entrance is by Philip Lindsay Clark and the etched and coloured glass is by John Hutton. The etched glass is by from 1955 (one panel not shown as it was covered by a blind in the sanctuary) and the coloured glass from 1968 (the last two panels are encased by a more recent church hall and are not illuminated, hence the reflections).

St Chad, Eric Road, Chadwell Heath, RM6 6JH

By Frederick Chancellor 1895-98, the tower added 1897-98. The church (January 2023) is currently undergoing extensive building work.

St Peter and St Paul, Dagenham

In the old village of Dagenham. The chancel is 13th century, the nave and tower by William Mason from 1801-1805. Much of the large churchyard is managed as a nature reserve.

St Alban, Becontree

In the west of the Becontree estate near the station of that name. It was designed by Milner & Craze and built in 1933-34. probably the most striking of the estate’s churches.
