St John the Baptist, King Edwards Road, Hackney (Roman Catholic)

A replacement of a war damaged church. It is by Archard and Partners dating from 1956.

St John of Jerusalem, South Hackney

A large church of 1845-48 by E.C. Hakewill. For its date it is a remarkably well detailed church. The spire by N.F. Cachemaille-Day was added in after the orignal broach spire was destroyed in WW2.

St Paul (former), Chelmer Road/Glyn Road, Homerton now Clapton Community Seventh-day Adventist Church

A large cruciform church in a grid of suburban streets. It is by Henry Cowell Boyes and dates from 1890-91. The chancel is now dominated by an organ, from the disused Methodist church of Annfield Plain, County Durham installed in front of an east wall painting of Christ in Majesty by Eva Allen Andrews dating from 1898 to 1900. Prior to it being a Seventh Day Adventist church it was used by the Celestial Church of Christ, who installed, now removed, low ceilings in the chancel and north aisle. The north aisle partitioning dates from its Anglican days.  It became in March 2006, the Clapton Community Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Christ Church on the Mead (former), Homerton Road, Homerton

A small chapel in the Wally Foster community centre, built in 1976. Since April 2017 there have been no services held here.

Immaculate Heart of Mary & St Dominic, Kenworthy Road, Homerton (Roman Catholic)

By C.A. Buckler 1875-83, but gutted in 1941 and rebuilt by John E. Sterret 1955-57 with much stained glass added by Goddard and Gibbs in the clerestory. The north aisle currently (May 2022) has a series of artworks from the Misereor Lenten Campaign.

St Mary (new), Stoke Newington

On the opposite side of the road to the humble older church this is a large church by G.G. Scott dating from 1854-58, the tower and spire were completed by his son J.O. Scott in 1890 to create a major local landmark.

St John, Hackney

By James Spiller 1791-94, restored after fire in 1955 by N.F. Cachemaille-Day and William C. Lock. During the Covid pandemic the interior was reordered by the Holy Trinity, Brompton plant that occupies the building. This page shows the current layout in the first set of images and the 2013 layout seen on my first visit.

St Augustine, Hackney

The medieval west tower of the former Hackney parish church.

St Mary at Eton, Hackney Wick

A Bodley & Garner church of 1890-92, with the western bays of the nave added by Cecil Hare in 1911-12. The name comes from this originally being a mission to the east end from Eton School. The church has recently been restored alongside the construction of new buildings on either side of the site.
