St Katherine, Danish Church (Lutheran)

Built in 1826 by Ambrose Poynter as the chapel of St Katherine’s Hospital.

St Mark, St Mark’s Square, Regents Park

Near the Regent’s Canal and the Zoo a church by Thomas Little of 1851-52, to which Blomfield added a chancel  in 1890, however war damage meant that the roofs and east wall were by A.P. Knapp-Fisher and date from 1957. There are  Ninian Comper altarpieces and stained glass that were added after the war, replacing damaged items by the same artist.

St Mary Magdalene, North Ockenden

Still a small village away from suburbia. Medieval, restored by Richard Armstrong 1858. The interior features a chapel containing many memorials to the Poyntz family.

St Chad and St Andrew (Former), St Andrews Road, Plaistow now Universal Church of the Kingdom of God

A James Brooks church of 1868-70. Now used by the Brazillian-originated Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. The church is divided horizontally and vertically. The chancel contains an auditorium for Portuguese language services which are held in parallel with English language services in the nave. The north transept contains a full immersion font and the crossing and south transept stairs and a lift to the upper levels. None of the Anglican fittings survive.

All Saints, East India Docks Road, Poplar

In a large green churchyard, built by Charles Hollis 1820-23.

St Mathias, Poplar

Now converted into a community centre (1990-91) after years of dereliction following redundancy in 1976. At its heart is a church of 1652-54 built as a chapel for the East India Company,  remodelled by William Milford Teulon 1870-76 as a parish church.

St Mary, Cable Street, Shadwell

By Frederick J. Francis from 1848-50. A prominent spire amongst the housing. The interior is only viewable from the west door and a small enclosed narthex.

Assumption and All Saints (Former), Ennismore Gardens, Kensington (now Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God and All Saints Russian Orthodox Cathedral)

Originally an Anglican church of 1848-49 by Lewis Vulliamy. The tower was added in 1870. It is now a Russian Orthodox cathedral.

St Paul, Wilton Place, Knightsbridge

Designed by Thomas Cundy II in 1840-1843. In 1870-71 the chancel was lengthened by R.J. Withers in 1870-1871 and then further extended by G.F, Bodley in 1891-92 Bodley is also responsible for many of the church’s fittings such as the screen, reredos and organ case. The Stations date from 1920-1922 and are by Gerald Moira and the tiled decoration was added 1869-1879 and is attributed to Daniel Bell.

St John the Baptist, Holland Road, Shepherds Bush

The west front is by J.S. Adkins 1909-11, behind it lies a James Brooks church of 1872-89. The interior is stone vaulted throughout and contains rich furnishings, with much glass by Clayton & Bell. Hidden at the northeast end is the tiny Blessed Sacrament chapel.
