Christ Church, Brixton Road, Brixton

Standing out at the northern end of Brixton Road, this is a byzantine style church of 1902 by Beresford Pite. The western end is divided off with the worship area under the dome and in the chancel

St Gabriel’s Chapel, Cormont Road, Kennington (former)

On the opposite site of Myatt’s Fields Park from st James, Knatchbull Road. It is the chapel of a former teacher training college and now in domestic use. It dates from 1903 and was designed by P.A. Robson.

St James, Knatchbull Road, Kennington (former)

Overlooking Myatt’s Fields Park it dates from 1869-70 and was designed by George Low. It was made redundant in 1981 and converted to a housing development called Black Roof House.

St John the Divine, Vassall Road, Kennington

A landmark a few 100 metres off Brixton Road. It is by G.E. Street 1870-74 with the spire completed 1888-89 under A.E. Street. Internal decoration by G.F. Bodley was added in 1890-92. It was restored, following war damage, by H.S. Goodhart-Rendel in 1955-58

St Michael, Stockwell Park Road, Stockwell

Built 1840-41 and designed by W. Rogers. It is a typical commissioner’s style church of its date but with a rather fanciful frontage. Its future is under consideration as is St Andrew, Stockwell (Dec 2014).

St James, Park Hill/Briarwood Road, Clapham Park

Lying between the two streets above this is a church of 1958 by N.F.Cachemaille-Day replacing a church of 1829 destroyed in WW2.

 

Holy Spirit, Narbonne Avenue, Clapham

Just off Abbeville Road east of the Common. It is a very tall church of 1912-13 by H.P. Burke-Downing.

 

St Anselm, Kennington Road, Kennington Cross

Planned in 1911 but not built until 1932-33 to designs by Adshead & Ramsey. The murals are by Norman Adams

St John, Waterloo Road, Waterloo

Built 1822-24 and designed by Francis Bedford. The interior was restored after war damage by T.F. Ford in 1951. The church reopened in October 2022 with a restored nave, crypt, and a new narthex with a glass screen looking into the nave. The pulpit has been removed, the font resited against a wall, and different seating installed. The paintings on the sanctuary wall and reredos are by Hans Feibusch. This £5.5 million work was designed by Eric Parry Architects.

St Paul, Rectory Grove, Clapham

Built in 1815 by C.Edmonds. The east end was added by Arthur Blomfield in a romanesque style in 1879. Apart from the Lady Chapel, containing impressive monuments, this is now separated off from the church as a community centre
