St Thomas, Clapton Common

Built around 1774 by John Devall with an east tower added in 1829 by Joseph Gwilt. Severely damaged in WW2 the nave was rebuilt by N.F. Cachemaille-Day in 1960.

Ark of the Covenant (Former) then Church of the Good Shepherd (Former), Rookwood Road, Upper Clapton now Georgian Orthodox Cathedral Church of the Nativity of Our Lord

A church with a fascinating history. It was built, as the Ark of The Covenant for a now defunct sect called the Agapemones, in 1892-95 by Joseph Morris and Sons of Reading. It was used by the Ancient Catholic Church as the Church of the Good Shepherd , before becoming the Georgian Orthodox Cathedral in 2011. The outsize sculptures on the tower are by A.G. Walters. The interior has a complete set of contemporary  glazing designed by Walter Crane and made by J Sylvester Sparrow.

St Andrew, Bethune Road, Stamford Hill

On a crossroads west of Stamford Hill. It dates from 1883-84 and is an A.W.Blomfield design. The interior features an almost complete decorative scheme by Heaton, Butler & Bayne.

St Olave, Woodberry Down, Manor House

Opposite the newly reconstructed Woodberry Down estate, it dates from 1893 and is by Ewan Christian. All the glass is by Powell & Co.

St Thomas Moore, Henry Road, Manor House (Roman Catholic)

A small church hidden away in suburban streets near manor House Station. It dates from 1972-75 and was designed by John Newton of Burles, Newton and Partners. It also features a dovecot and its own white doves.

St John the Evangelist, Queens Drive, Brownswood Park

Near Finsbury Park, a semi-circular “flying saucer” design by Tom Hornsby dating from 1995. It replaced a 19th century church on the same site. The saints are reset glass from the former church, the other windows showing the Apocalyptic Visions of St. John are by Meg Lawrence from 1996 (apologies for one being a bit out of focus).

Holy Trinity, Beechwood Road, Dalston

A large bulk of a church south of the town centre.The scene of the annual clowns church service. It is by Ewan Christian and dates from 1878-79. Much more individual than most of his designs.

Our Lady and St Joseph, Balls Pond Road, Dalston (Roman Catholic)

By W.C. Mangan and built 1962-64 and set back from the road not far from Kingsland Road in central Dalston.

St Peter, De Beauvoir Road, Hackney

On the edge of De Beauvoir Square, a church of 1840-41 by W.C. Lochner. The chancel was added in 1884 by H.Romieu Gough. Inside it retains its galleries.

Holy Trinity, Shepherdess Walk, Hoxton

At the end of a short cul de sac a church by William. Railton of 1848.
