Near the northern end of the town centre, a church of 1886 by J. Ladds. The aisles have ben divided off and a large extension to make this St Paul’s Centre has been added on the south side. Folding partitions can separate the nave from the chancel and transepts. Many of the furnishings such as the altar, pulpit and chancel screen have been removed.

St Mary, Hendon Lane, Finchley

At the southern end of Finchley town centre in the area called Church End. Set back from the road, this is a 15th century church at heart. However there is a small amount of evidence of a Norman building, the 19th century saw Newman and Billing add a south aisle, north aisle clerestory and rebuilt arcade in 1872. The next century saw Charles Nicholson add the outer south aisle in 1932. The chancel was badly damaged in WW2 and was rebuilt and extended by Caroe and Partners.

St Mary and Archangel Michael, Cranbourne Gardens, Temple Fortune (Coptic)

In suburbia north of the centre of Golders Green. This was built as St Barnabas C of E church in 1915 by J.S. Alder. The chancel and Lady chapel were added in 1932-34 by Ernest Shearman. The nave was rebuilt in 1962 by Romilly B. Craze after war damage. It became a Coptic church in 1996 and this was when the west porch was added. The original altar and reredos are retained in the chancel behind the iconostasis. There is a long running construction project to add extra facilities alongside and to the rear of the church.

Cathedral of Holy Cross and St Michael, Golders Green Road, Golders Green (Greek Orthodox)

At the northern end of the town centre. This was built as St Michael’s C of E church in 1913 by J.T. Lee, with a west end added by Caroe and Passmore in 1924-25. The tower was added in 1960 by James Barrington-Baker. Shared by a Greek Orthodox congregation from 1970 it was closed as an Anglican church in 1979.

All Saints, Church Walk, Child’s Hill

Behind the church school that fronts onto Cricklewood Lane. The church was built in 1853-56 by Thomas Talbot Bury. A north aisle was added in 1878 by John Young and a south aisle in 1884. A fire in 1940 led to a major rebuilding in 1952 by S.C. Ramsey. The Stations of the Cross are a different selection of topics compared to the standard set. There are two externally facing east windows made up of glass fragments by Sophie Hacker and installed in 2022 to commemorate Covid.  I have left the 2017 set at the end as they show the windows before the Covid glass.

St Peter (Former), Cricklewood lane, Cricklewood now Sadhu Vaswani Mission

This building was the church hall for St Peter. The church was built in 1891 and demolished in 1970s (the site is now the car park for the Virgin Active health club over the road). Worship was transferred to the church hall of 1910 which had the dormer windows added at this time. This building was sold in 2003 and is now being converted to be the Sadhu Vaswani Mission. The congregation has since met in buildings in nearby Claremont Road.

St Agnes, Cricklewood Lane, Cricklewood (Roman Catholic)

A short way up the road from the station, away from the town centre. A typical T.H.B. Scott of 1930 (all published sources say this, despite the 1928 date on the consecration stone)
